Homeschooling is an activity to send their children at home in full. Understand this may seem a bit eccentric because while everyone send their children to public schools, why there is so people who send their children at home. Is not that tantamount to no school. The thinking like this happen because there is a historical process (cut off from history) who forget that the first school was at the start of the home. Only later after a teacher became a particular profession began to move into a school building named for the school.
Now, homeschooling experiencing a comeback, especially in the United States. This change occurs because of the education world had changed in the last century, the increasingly central institution in the hands of the state. Homeschool is a reaction to the change.
When categorized, the reasons for doing homeschooling can be written like this:
1. Schools do not teach the true faith to my children. Frankly, this is often the main reason for parents to download homeschooling for his son. At least 80% of homeschooling activists in America are of this class. They are Evangelical and Fundamentalist Christians who do not want their children taught science as opposed to the scriptures.
2. Schools as educational institutions already dilapidated. A lot of bullying at school. Teachers can not educate properly, and even make your child stress. Not to mention that the school likes fighting and crime-prone. For the case of Indonesia, they are likely to send their children for this very reason, because of disappointment with educational institutions here.
3. Do not agree with the philosophy of education that is applied in schools. Approximately 10% of homeschooling activists in America have this view. They chose to send their children at home alone, with their preferred approach to education.
4. Parents want to take full responsibility for their children’s education. The reason this could have an alternative explanation of the three reasons above.
There are several objections to the school in a house that used to put forward people:
1. Parents are not professional teachers, how can they educate their children.
2. Children will not be sociable because they do not mix with other children at school.
3. Do not know what the curriculum should wear.
4. The cost to buy the book to be larger because they can not borrow books from the school.
I am trying to clear up the four objections above.
First, everyone who is actually older than for younger teachers. No one can not teach. Everyone who can read can teach others to read. Similarly, the arithmetic and others. But what about the hard sciences like physics and chemistry? Here lies the misunderstanding. Homeschooling does not mean that parents teach children, but parents learn with their children. So there is no requirement that parents must master the subject matter. If there is difficulty in mastering the material, assistance can be sought later.
Second, school at home does not mean the child should be locked up at home. Children can still be free to play with neighbours, or even sent to school in non-formal schools such as school sports or music school.
Third, now, with the ease of information technology, access to the curriculum can be obtained easily. Groups of homeschooling parents who run have also begun to emerge.
Fourth, the cost of homeschooling can actually lower, because it does not have to exit the building costs, uniforms, transport and pocket money. Indeed, shopping for books at the beginning will look great, but when divided per year will be much cheaper than the cost of the total school.
Noteworthy is that homeschooling requires a huge responsibility of parents to child development. It is a commitment that is not easy, especially for the city. Therefore, before deciding to run a homeschooling I can offer these suggestions:
1. Are you sure that you will prioritize your time and energy to your child’s education?
2. Seek as much information before deciding. If you can even chat with people who are running it.
3. Check at your local education office if your child can get a formal diploma or equations and how, because it relates to the continued study of your child at a higher level.
4. Do not force your child to homeschooling, give understanding to him. If he prefers a formal school, leave it alone. Unless the child is older, you can better give more consideration to your child, because she was a dialogue and debate can be invited if necessary.
